Cruise packing list: 103 must-have items

best clothes for a cruise

During the daytime, you’ll likely want to wear a few different outfits. In one half of the day, you may be relaxing by the pool and the other half taking part in some of the onboard activities. You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea. Although the dress code on Holland America Line ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed.

Miscellaneous items to pack for your cruise

Have you ever had that nightmare where you're at work, in school or giving an important presentation, and you look down to discover you're wearing only your underwear (or worse, nothing at all)? If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared. Second, unlike air travel, cruise lines don’t have hard rules regarding how much luggage you can bring. You can pack a huge suitcase and there’s no charge or weight limit.

The best cruise pants, shorts, tops, sweaters, and outerwear

If you want to cover the top of your arms in a sleeveless dress, then do consider pretty arm cover ups. Read my full post about sleeves for dresses for more hints and tips. Nordstrom and Joseph Ribkoff (see stockist links at the end of this post) have some great cruise evening wear. They are a great fit, hang beautifully, they’re versatile, and mostly don’t crease – ideal for travelling. Check out similar Joseph Ribkoff styles at great prices below. Tops that are lightweight and which don’t cling to my tummy are top of the pops for me, as are tops that cover the top of my arms.

Curious Cruise Ship Jobs: Stage Staff

First-time cruisers don't realize all the cruise ship cabin hacks they can employ to enhance their onboard accommodations. Pack them in your carry-on so they're always on hand and less likely to go missing. Whether you're packing cruisewear for women, men or non-binary people, I recommend getting creative. My favorite part of going on a vacation is that I get to wear things I wouldn't normally wear in my day-to-day.

Do you dress up for dinner on a cruise?

This outfit can easily carry you into the evening, but dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and swapping from a backpack to handbag will create a softer look. Be ready for all of the fun cruise ship adventures, from the skydive simulator to the waterpark. Swap flip-flops for dressy sandals or closed-toed shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant.

I like Yosi Samra because they come in lots of fun colors and patterns, fold up to fit better in your bag, and are super comfortable. Embarking on a cruise is a journey of discovery – of places, cultures, and seas. The right clothing choices can enhance your experience, ensuring you’re prepared for every adventure while looking your best. Accessories are not just add-ons; they can define a cruise clothes outfit and enhance your cruise experience.

Casual Dinner Outfit

Do you enjoy dressing up when on a cruise or do you prefer to keep it casual? Full disclosure – I like to shop, I over-pack and I bring too many shoes. On Lifestyle Fifty I share style inspiration and ways to look good, feel good, do good and have adventures. It’s all about The Art of Ageing, Living the Good Life and Looking Fashionable everyday.

Shoes

Whether you stuff it into your suitcase, jam it into your backpack, or accidentally step on it, this hat welcomes the abuse and keeps coming back for more. There’s also a built-in sweatband inside to keep you looking cool even on the hottest days. Sun hats seem like a great idea for protecting you from intense rays, until you realize your hair is stuck to your sweaty neck and back. Choose a visor style, like the Simplicity, that allows you to plop your hair in a pony or messy bun to instantly feel cooler. It’s made from 100 percent straw, offers a UPF of 50+, and the adjustable hook and loop closure allows the perfect fit on any size noggin.

On every cruise line, daytime clothing is casual, and on a big-ship cruise, nearly anything goes. On a more upscale or luxury cruise ship, casual daywear tends to be more fashion-forward and stylish, so you might feel out of place in your cheap tee from Target. However, you’re also more than welcome to elevate your style with button-up shirts, pantsuits, cocktail dresses, skirts, heels and blazers. For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea.

Take one pair of beautifully cut black pants for evening wear that you can wear with different coloured tops. However, don’t just take white cut-off pants for shore excursions – be a bit inventive – how about khaki, or navy, or patterned or floral? Something patterned can be teamed with different block coloured blouses. Overall, don’t rely on buying clothes onboard because they might not be to your style, but do see them as an added extra to top up your wardrobe if necessary. Just remember that while walking from your stateroom to the pool and vice versa, you’ll need to wear a swim cover up. Wicking tops, lightweight fleeces, and even pants that zip off into shorts are all a good idea for Alaska, especially if you’re out hiking.

Consider an eye patch or swashbuckling hat for Disney Cruise Line's Pirate Night, a white sundress for Norwegian Cruise Line's White Hot Night and some neon leggings for Carnival Cruise Line's '80s night. Packing for a cruise can be complicated, especially for first-timers who aren't 100% sure what to expect. The task is made even more stressful because you can't run to the nearest shopping mall to pick up something you forgot when you're sailing in the middle of the ocean. Don’t be fooled by how thin this Ridge Cuff Beanie from Minus33 is — it’ll keep your head warmer than you’d ever imagine. That warmth comes from the 100 percent merino wool, which helps wick moisture away so you stay dry, even when sweating through winter-weather activities like glacier hiking or ice fishing. It’s machine-washable, comes in an array of neutral and fashionable hues, and will hardly take up any room in your suitcase.

Over-the-counter medications are pricey on board, so bring the brands you most commonly use. If you take prescription medicine, bring enough for the trip and a few extra days' worth, just in case. Cruisers traveling in a group should consider planning matching outfits, especially if they wish to take group photos on board.
